October 28, 1987

MANILA, Philippines (AP) _ Communist rebels are suspected of killing a police captain and the bodyguard of a suburban Manila mayor in separate attacks Wednesday, officials reported.

Police Sgt. Eliseo Canares said Capt. Eduardo Mediavillo, deputy commander of a district police station, was shot and killed by three gunmen as he waited at about 7:30 a.m. in his jeep at an intersection in Manila’s Tondo neighborhood.

At about the same time, a police bodyguard of Benjamin Abalos, mayor of suburban Mandaluyong, was slain by three gunmen as he was driving to the mayor’s residence, according to a police report.

It said the killers stole the victims’ weapons and escaped.

Four government or security people have been killed in the Manila area in the past two days. A political ward leader and an army sergeant were shot Tuesday in separate attacks.

Police said the killings were carried out by assassination teams of the communist New People’s Army. The teams, known as ″sparrow units,″ have been blamed for killing scores of police, soldiers and government officials this year.
