SOUTHERN PINES, N.C. (AP) _ Brenda Corrie Kuehn has secured her spot in next week’s U.S. Women’s Open, but whether she plays or not is up to her obstetrician.
Kuehn, who lives near Asheville, will be eight months’ pregnant when the championship begins at Pine Needles Lodge & Golf Club on May 31. She will visiting her physician Thursday in hopes of being cleared to play.
``I’m going to do some sweet-talking to get the doctor to say ’Yes,‴ the 36-year-old Kuehn said. ``I feel that at this stage my choices are to either lay around the house or be outside doing something. ... Golfing actually keeps your mind off the pregnancy and makes it all go by a little faster.″
This would be Kuehn’s eighth appearance in the Open. She qualified for this one on May 8 with a 71 at the Standard Club in Atlanta.
Four years ago, while pregnant with her first child, Kuehn played competitively into her seventh month. If she gets her doctor’s permission this time, Kuehn’s husband, who is a physician, will be her caddy.
``The only thing I’ll have to do different is drink a lot of water,″ Kuehn said.
