Snodgrass, Flagstaff blank Mohave: Welt pitches, Smith hits well during Lady T-birds’ 2-0 loss
BULLHEAD CITY — MaKenna Snodgrass pitched four innings of four-hit softball to lead the Lady Eagles over the Mohave High School Lady T-birds 2-0 at Flagstaff High School on Tuesday.
Snodgrass struck out eight, hit two T-bird batters and walked one in six innings to earn the Ariziona Interscholastic Association 4A Grand Canyon Region win.
Sadie Giles earned the save by hurling one scoreless inning in relief of Snodgrass.
T-birds junior pitcher Sammie Welt was the hard-luck loser. Welt gave up two runs on five hits, while striking out nine and walking three in six innings.
The Eagles scored one run in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings off of Welt.
Aryn Drye doubled and knocked home one run in three at-bats; and Andie Elliott doubled, walked twice knocked home one run and scored one run in one at-bat to lead Flagstaff’s offense.
Freshman second baseman Ashley Smith singled twice in three at-bats; and senior third baseman Taylor Lujan singled and walked in three at-bats for the T-birds.
“We left eight runners on base, four in scoring postion,” said Mohave head coach Shannon Patterson about her T-birds’ offense. “We can’t keep doing that and expect to be successful moving forward.
“We are looking to improve upon (Tuesday’s) effort at the plate and pick up a league win against them (3:45 p.m.) on Thursday at home.”
Tuesday’s loss put Mohave’s record at 0-12 overall, 0-3 in region, according to MaxPreps.
The T-birds also will host Coconino High School Panthers at 3:45 p.m. on Friday.
“Hopefully we can get those bleachers filled,” said Patterson about today’s and Friday’s home region games.
“(We’re) definitely getting better with the mental side of the game and figuring out field position roles, so once we get our bats going, it’s on.” Patterson said.
