Herd women eye Texas-size sweep vs. Roadrunners
HUNTINGTON — Just a few weeks ago, Marshall University women’s basketball swept a road series in Conference USA.
Now, the Thundering Herd is on the verge of doing it in consecutive conference road trips.
Marshall (12-9, 6-2 C-USA) is at UTSA (6-14, 1-7) for a 3 p.m. Saturday game. Marshall notched its third consecutive road victory Thursday at UTEP (7-13, 2-7), 63-60.
Following a flight to El Paso, Texas, from San Antonio following a game that went to the wire, the Herd needs to dig deep to find some energy.
Marshall fell behind UTEP by double figures early and got back in the game after halftime, while UTSA was losing at Western Kentucky, 81-62.
UTSA has struggled in C-USA with its offense averaging 59.3 points per game. The Roadrunners are a better rebounding team than UTEP, so Marshall will have to get its guards going to the backboards. Marshall outrebounded UTEP by three.
Senior guard Shayna Gore led the Herd with 17 points, junior guard Khadaijia Brooks secured a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds and senior guard Taylor Porter scored 11. Sophomore guard Kristen Mayo collected eight rebounds.
The Herd trio of Gore (18.5 points per game), Porter (11.6) and Brooks (9.0) have led the team on the road this season.
UTSA features one of the league’s top players in Maria Benson, who averages 16.5 points and a C-USA leading 10.8 rebounds. The Roadrunners also have Tija Hawkins scoring 11.8 a game.
