Brazil won the gold medal at the Pan American Games last summer and was expected to win a medal here in its first Olympic appearance.
Italy was a last-minute replacement for Yugoslavia, which could not send any teams to Barcelona because of United Nations sanctions. Italy’s last appearance in Olympic basketball was 1980, when it finished last in a six-team field. This was an eight-team field.
