HISTORY: The United States best run in the World Cup in 72 years ended with a 1-0 defeat to Germany in the quarterfinals. The U.S. team made the quarterfinals in the first World Cup in 1930 when only 13 teams competed.

STAR: Oliver Kahn, Germany. The German goalkeeper punched out U.S. crosses, disrupted attacks and made several key saves to lead his team past the United States. It was Kahn's fourth clean sheet of the tournament.

GOAL OF THE DAY: Rivaldo, Brazil. While Rivaldo scored it, Ronaldinho made it spectacular. His swerving run from midfield ended with a pass inside the box to Rivaldo, who one-touched the ball inside the far post to tie Brazil's game with England 1-1 just before halftime. Brazil went on to win, 2-1.

LOOKAHEAD: Co-host South Korea, which has already defeated Portugal, Poland and Italy, looks to beat another European team when it takes on Spain in the quarterfinals at 2:30 a.m. EDT in Gwangju, South Korea.

Senegal tries to continue its surprising run in its first World Cup when it faces Turkey, a team making its first appearance in 48 years. Only the second African team ever to reach the quarterfinals, Senegal meets Turkey at 7:30 a.m. EDT in Osaka, Japan.
