In first ad, Bermudez Zimmerman sells her outsider status

August 11, 2018

Political newcomer Eva Bermudez Zimmerman will have her first television commercial on the airwaves this weekend in the hopes that it will help her defeat Susan Bysiewicz in the Democratic primary for lieutenant governor Tuesday.

31-year-old Bermudez Zimmerman emphasizes her position as an outsider in the 30-second commercial, released Friday. It’s a point Bermudez Zimmerman has hammered throughout her campaign against Bysiewicz, Connecticut’s former three-term secretary of the state.

“We’re coming off the sidelines,” Bermudez Zimmerman narrates in the ad. “We have to return the power to the people.”

Bermudez Zimmerman is a union organizer who has never been elected to office. She was appointed to the Newtown Legislative Council and unsuccessfully ran for the state House of Representatives.

She would be the first Latina to hold statewide office in Connecticut, if elected.

“I’m running for lieutenant governor to make sure every person in Connecticut has the same shot at success no matter their gender, race or zip code,” she says in the ad.

Although she declared her candidacy days before the state Democratic convention, Bermudez Zimmerman received the support of 40 percent of delegates, many of whom spoke of the need for more diversity in the Democratic party.
