Man fails to appear in court over fatal Illinois crash
URBANA, Ill. (AP) — A driver ticketed over a Champaign County crash that killed three members of an Indiana family has failed to appear in court.
Twenty-year-old Xiang Cheng is accused of improper lane usage in the April 2014 crash north of Homer. The offense is punishable by a fine. He does not face criminal charges.
His attorney, Aaron Brakke, says Cheng is in China, and he asked the judge to excuse his absence at Tuesday’s pretrial hearing.
The (Champaign) News-Gazette reports (http://bit.ly/1Iwjv8G ) that the judge denied the request, while also refusing the state’s attorney’s request for an arrest warrant to be issued.
Judge Brian McPheters continued the case until Feb. 10 and ordered Cheng to appear.
The April 20 crash killed Otis Doxtator of Indianapolis; his wife, Dorothy; and their 33-year-old son, Scott.
