TOKYO (AP) _ Princess Kikuko, Emperor Akihito’s aunt, was hospitalized for pneumonia Thursday, an Imperial Household Agency spokesman said.
The 90-year-old princess has been ill for about a week. She had a slight cough and a fever, and a chest X-ray at a Tokyo hospital showed she had pneumonia, agency spokesman Takehiro Shimoto said.
Kikuko is the widow of Prince Takamatsu, the previous Emperor Hirohito’s younger brother. She is the granddaughter of Japan’s last shogun, or feudal lord, Yoshinobu Tokugawa.
Her hospitalization comes a week after Emperor Akihito’s cousin, Prince Takamado, died of heart failure at age 47. The prince, who was seventh in line to the Chrysanthemum Throne, collapsed during a squash lesson at the Canadian Embassy in Tokyo on Nov. 21. His funeral is Friday.
Princess Kikuko and her husband had no children. Takamatsu died of lung cancer in 1987, at the age of 82.
