90-Year-Old Wins $16 Million Lottery

June 4, 2003

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Luis Salazar has seen a lot in his 90 years. But he’s never seen $16 million. Until Tuesday.

The Osceola County man, believed to be the oldest person ever to win the lottery in Florida, came to Tallahassee to collect his prize. Salazar chose a lump sum of $10,089,377.57 over 30 annual payments of $533,333.

He plans to give some to his church in Kissimmee and spend the money on his grandchildren and other family members.

He said he might do a little traveling too _ back to where he grew up.

``I have to go back to Puerto Rico,″ he said Tuesday at Lottery Headquarters.

Salazar moved to Osceola County 14 years ago after retiring from a Puerto Rico cement-distribution company, where he worked as a purchasing agent.

Then he went to work at Winn-Dixie in Buenaventura Lakes as a bagger, retiring at age 87. It was the same store where he bought his winning ticket last week.
