Senate president’s proposal to aid skyscraper project
PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island Senate President Dominick Ruggerio says he plans to introduce legislation that could help a developer overcome delays on a plan to build what would be the tallest building in the state.
Ruggerio said during an annual state Public Expenditure Council meeting Monday that he wants to give more authority to the Interstate 195 Commission instead of the Providence City Council.
New York developer Jason Fane is seeking a zoning change to build a 46-story skyscraper on former I-195 land in Providence.
The City Council Ordinance Committee previously denied recommending the change. The council has since sent Fane’s proposal back for further review.
Ruggerio says the tower proposal should get enthusiastic support, “but we have done all we can to chase him away.”
The General Assembly reconvenes in January.
