Marshall baseball picked low in C-USA

HUNTINGTON - Conference USA baseball head coaches predicted an 11th-place finish for Marshall University among the 12 league members.

Marshall catcher Rey Pastrana was a preseason all-conference selection. Pastrana is a senior from Miami who led Marshall last season with a .355 batting average, 13 home runs, 71 hits and 50 runs batted in. He picked off 20 of 37 base runners attempting to steal.

He was a 2018 all-conference player and a finalist for the Johnny Bench Award that goes to college baseball’s top catcher.

The Thundering Herd season begins Feb.15 against Milwaukee in Kissimmee,Fla.

Southern Miss, the defending regular season and tournament champion, was picked for first place in the preseason poll with eight first-place votes followed by Louisiana Tech, Florida Atlantic, Rice and FIU.

Matt Wallner, a junior who plays in the outfield and pitches for Southern Miss, was picked as the Preseason Player of the Year. Rice junior Matt Canterino was the choice for Preseason Pitcher of the Year.

Track and field

HUNTINGTON - Marshall is hosting the Thundering Herd Invitational women’s track and field meet Friday and Saturday at Jeff Small Track in the Chris Cline Indoor Athletic Complex. Friday competition begins at 5:30 p.m.
