FORT COLLINS, Colo. (AP) _ A nurse who gave a 10-year-old boy herpes during a sexual assault has been sentenced to six years in prison.

Shirley Ann Vigil, 33, of Berthoud, pleaded guilty Sept. 26 to one count of sexual assault on a child.

Vigil could have been sentenced Monday to from two to eight years in pri1/2 on, and experts had suggested she be given little or no jail time along with counseling. District Judge John-David Sullivan said he levied the heavier sentence partly because Ms. Vigil infected the boy with genital herpes.

The boy, a fifth-grader at the time, told authorities Vigil, who was living with the family as a housekeeper and babysitter for the three children, came to his bedroom several nights in the fall of 1984, climbed into bed with him, and performed a variety of sexual acts.

The boy's parents learned about the acts after he complained of genital sores and a doctor diagnosed herpes.

Vigil, a former night nurse at McKee Medical Center in Loveland, has been on leave since the incident was reported last December. Her nursing license has been suspended, according to court records.
