Arlene, Adrian Lead Off Hurricane Names

May 24, 1987

WASHINGTON (AP) _ Arlene will be the name of this year’s first East Coast hurricane, while the first one in the West will be Adrian, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Admininstration announced.

The service released two sets of hurricane names, one for storms in the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico and the second for hurricanes arriving from the Pacific Ocean.

The names of men and women alternate on the lists, which are established by international agreement and used to help differentiate the storms.

Hurricanes are major tropical storms, with sustained wind speeds of 74 miles per hour or more. They are sometimes called typhoons in the Pacific.

Here are the storm names for this year:

East Coast: Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Dennis, Emily, Floyd, Gert, Harvey, Irene, Jose, Katrine, Lenny, Maria, Nate, Ophelia, Philippe, Rita, Stan, Tammy, Vince and Wilma.

West Coast: Adrian, Beatriz, Calvin, Dora, Eugene, Fernanda, Greg, Hilary, Irwin, Jova, Knut, Lidia, Max, Norma, Otis, Pilar, Ramon, Selma, Todd, Veronica and Wiley.
