PALERMO, Sicily (AP) _ Spain's Sergi Bruguera outlasted countryman Emilio Alvarez in three sets Tuesday to advance to the second round of the ATP tournament with three other Spaniards.

Bruguera lost the opening set, but came on to win 5-7, 6-3, 6-4.

Other Spanish winners were Francisco Clavet, David Sanchez, Alex Calatrava, while No. 3 seed Carlos Moya withdrew for personal reasons.

Clavet ousted Russian Mikhail Youzhny 6-2, 6-4; Sanchez defeated Daniel Elsner of Germany 6-3, 6-1 and Calatrava beat Clemens Trimmel of Austria 6-2, 6-3.

Other first-round winners included Marino Puerta of Argentina and Olivier Rochus of Belgium.
