DETROIT (AP) _ Three police officers trying to pull over a van suspected of being involved in an abduction were shot late Saturday, two of them critically.
Police Chief Benny Napoleon said one officer’s injuries were not life threatening, but it was too early to tell whether the other two would survive. Those two were in surgery early Sunday.
``They are in very critical, very critical condition,″ he said. ``The other one is also being treated, but his injuries are not as severe. ... He is expected to make virtually a full recovery.″
The shootings occurred shortly after 11 p.m. The officers were still in their vehicles when shots were fired from a van they were trying to pull over.
``According to the description of one officer who was on the scene who was not injured they were under very heavy gunfire from a very high-powered assault type weapon,″ Napoleon said. ``As the rounds were striking the vehicle he could feel the impact. The rounds were shaking the car.″
All three were shot in the face, and one of the officers was shot through the head, he said.
Napoleon said one person was taken into custody about 45 minutes after the shootings. Police were looking for others.
