Police notebook for Jan. 30, 2019

Information is taken from the records of the Portage Police Department and does not represent a comprehensive list of police activity. Each individual named in this report is presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Between 8:03 a.m. Jan. 24 and 7:22 a.m. Jan. 30, police responded to 185 calls, including the following:

East Slifer Street and Pine Ridge Court: Police at 3:35 p.m. on Jan. 25 responded to a three-vehicle accident after one driver left the scene. The suspect vehicle was stopped, and police cited a 16-year-old Portage boy for criminal hit-and-run, following another vehicle too closely and failure to equip a vehicle with a required bumper.

New Pinery Road: Police at 3:54 p.m. on Jan. 25 conducted a K-9 search and arrested Melanie M. Reeson, 44, of Ridgeway, for possession of methamphetamines. Police also arrested Kristie L. Benzie, 40, of Hancock, for possession of drug paraphernalia.

West Franklin Street: Police at 3 a.m. on Jan. 26 arrested James R. Helm, Jr., 34, of Portage, for violation of a no-contact order and for violation of probation or parole and transferred him to the Columbia County Jail on a documented warrant.

New Pinery Road: Police at 11:58 a.m. on Jan. 26 responded to Divine Savior Hospital on a report of an uncooperative intoxicated male and arrested Michael T. Fisher, 53, of Portage, for multiple counts of bail jumping and transferred him to the Columbia County Jail.

West Franklin Street: Police at 6:07 p.m. on Jan. 26 responded to a burglary report at River of Life church and arrested two 11-year-old Portage boys and transferred them to a secure juvenile detention facility in La Crosse. Both male juveniles were referred on individual charges of burglary.

New Pinery Road: Police at 10:38 p.m. on Jan. 26 responded to an anonymous report of a marijuana odor and issued city ordinance citations to Christopher Jon Morrow, 34, of Portage, for possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.

West Pleasant Street: Police at 11:22 a.m. on Jan. 28 reported in a shift briefing that officers had issued a total of 61 snow emergency parking tickets.

New Pinery Road and West Collins Street: Police at 2:17 p.m. on Jan. 28 responded to a two-vehicle accident cited Shari Elizabeth Meyer, 41, of Portage, for failure to yield right of way from a redirected traffic signal.

New Pinery Road: Police at 10:50 p.m. on Jan. 28 responded to a report of theft at Walmart and cited Tommy Alison Jones, 38, of Portage, for theft and trespassing.

East Wisconsin Street: Police at 10:15 a.m. on Jan. 29 responded to a report of theft at Portage Lumber after a man entered the store, took a Milwaukee 6.5-inch circular saw and left the scene. Police could not immediately identify a suspect.

New Pinery Road: Police at 12:37 p.m. on Jan. 29 cited Rebecca L. McChesney, 39, of Montello, for a third offense of operating a motor vehicle after suspension and for not having proof of insurance. A vehicle was towed from a snowbank at the owner’s request.

East Conant Street and Monroe Street: Police at 6:18 p.m. on Jan. 29 responded to a two-vehicle crash and cited Zackary E. Shumate, 28, of Portage, for failure to obey traffic at a yield sign. Both vehicles were towed due to damages.
