FLORENCE, S.C. -- West Florence High School students were evacuated Thursday morning after one of the school’s bathrooms caught fire.

“Currently we have evacuated our building because our fire alarm has gone off. We had a contained fire in the boy’s bathroom,” according to a message which was sent out to parents and guardians of students at the school. “The fire department has been notified and responded quickly. After we secure the building we will proceed with our school day.”

Florence firefighters responded shortly before 11 a.m. and worked to clear smoke from the building.

West Florence students stood on athletic fields and other areas outside the school while the building was secured.

The Florence County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the fire, Florence Fire Marshal Chris Johnson said.
