WVC BOYS SOCCER ROUNDUP: MMI Prep Gets First Win Since 2015

At MMI Prep, goals by Ian Dewar and Carter Frask gave MMI Prep just enough firepower to beat Hanover Area, 2-1, and snap the longest active losing streak in Wyoming Valley Conference boys soccer Thursday.

The Preppers (1-6 Division 2) won their first WVC match since going 2-14 in the 2015 season. Dewar put them ahead with a goal only 2 minutes, 51 seconds into Thursday’s game, and Frask doubled their lead with 13-plus minutes remaining.

It was enough for MMI to hold on when Nick Evans got Hanover Area (1-5 Division 2) on the board in the final five minutes of regulation.

FIRST HALF: Ian Dewar (MMI) unassisted, 2:51.

SECOND HALF: Carter Frask (MMI) unassisted, 67:18; Nick Evans (Han) unassisted, 75:15.

Valley West 2, Tunkhannock 1

At Spartan Stadium in Kingston, Landon Serbin assisted Nate Naugle’s winning goal with 6:45 to play as the Spartans (7-3, 6-2 Division 1) dealt the Tigers (6-2, 4-2 Division 1) their second loss of the season.

Naugle’s goal broke a tie forced by Tunkhannock’s Eddie Melan with 20:31 to go, on an assist by Braiden Jerome.

Saquon Portee also scored for Valley West. Goalie Chris Stoodley stopped six shots.

SECOND HALF: Eddie Melan (Tun) from Braiden Jerome, 20:31; Nate Naugle (VW) from Landon Serbin, 6:45.

Hazleton Area 8, Nanticoke Area 3

At Nanticoke Area, Michael Mehalshick’s hat trick, plus two-goal days from Chris Wolk and Luke Russo, powered the Cougars.

Noah Matriccino also scored for the Cougars (4-3-2, 4-3-1 Division 1), who had their highest scoring output of the year. Hazleton Area has now won four games in a WVC season for the first time since 2016 (4-10).

Matthew Gomelko gave the Trojans (2-9, 1-8 Division 1) a goal before halftime, and Adam Eckhart and Tyler Rushton scored in the second half.
