Winning dogs announced from Ashland event

September 22, 2018

Dogs compete during Kentucky DockDogs at the Tin Woof Inn on Sunday in Ashland.

ASHLAND — High in the hills above Ashland, The Tin Woof Inn, 126 Linn Ave., and the Kentucky DockDog Club hosted a weekend tournament Dock-Dogs at Woof Stock (a Wild Card Double Header) that drew about 70 competitors from about nine states for the Sept. 7-9 competition.

The tournament featured owners competing with their dogs in events such as the Big Air (the dog long jump), Speed Retrieve (a timed event of swimming and fetching in the pool), Extreme Vertical (the dog high jump grabbing a bumper 8 feet out from the dock and up in the air) and Dueling Dogs (a new head-to-head jumping and swimming race).

This was the last chance qualifier for invites to DockDogs World Championship in Knoxville, Tennessee, Oct. 8-13.

For DuelingDogs it’s a qualifier for Canine Aquatics Sports’ 3rd annual World Championships that is set for April 6-8, 2019, at the Five Flags Center in Dubuque, Iowa.

First introduced to the world during the Incredible Dog Challenge, a Purina event in 1997, the sport of dock diving dogs now has three organizations hosting tournaments. Dogs in both the U.S. and the U.K. went over the 29-foot mark in 2011, and the new record is more than 31 feet long jumping and 8 feet 11 inches for a dog high jump.
