Gas leak prompts 200 to evacuate
HARRINGTON PARK, N.J. (AP) — About 200 people have been evacuated from their homes in New Jersey after a major gas leak.
Police say workers for the state utility PSE&G were doing repairs when they hit a main gas line in Harrington Park Thursday night. The police and fire department evacuated residents within a 300 to 400 yard radius of the leak.
Harrington Park’s Independent Mayor Paul Hoelscher tells WCBS-TV the age of the pipe made the gas leak a big concern for the area.
Evacuees were housed at Harrington Park Elementary School for several hours. There were no reported injuries.
Most residents were allowed to return to their homes around 11 p.m., but it is unclear when gas will be restored.
