2018 Top 10 Sports Stories: No. 8 Silver Cougars

December 30, 2018

Valley View wasn’t content with capturing its first District 2 baseball title since 2000. Buoyed by a, 1-0 victory over defending state champion Dallas in the Class 4A district final, the Cougars put together a run and reached the PIAA final for the first time since 1978. Behind timely hitting and the pitching of brothers Mason and Dixon Black, Valley View posted wins over three district champions — Lewisburg (4), Berks Catholic (3) and Northwestern Lehigh (11) — to advance to the final at Penn State University’s Medlar Field against District 7 runner-up Ringgold. Things started well. Eleven batters in, the Cougars had four runs and seven hits. But Ringgold limited them to four hits the rest of the way. The Rams rallied for a 6-4 win, forcing Valley View to settle for silver. Just as it did in 1978. — SCOTT WALSH
