ASPEN, Colo. (AP) _ Tim Cowen of Rifle and Colleen Canon of Boulder outdistanced 132 competitors to win their respective divisions in the Aspen Triathlon short course.
Cowen recorded the fastest overall time of one hour, 35 minutes and one second Sunday. Cannon completed the course in 1:43:13.
The short course consisted of a one-half mile swim, an 18-mile bicycle ride and a five-mile run.
Michael Carroll of Colorado Springs was second in the men’s division, with a time of 1:38:21, and Mike Hughes of Aspen was third in 1:40:29.
In the women’s division, Carol Lawley of Snowmass Village was second, posting a time of 1:51:26, and Amy Williams of Denver was third in 1:54:34.
SOLANO BEACH, Calif. (AP) - Two-time Ironman Scott Tinley came from behind to win the last leg of a U.S. Triathlon series race.
Tinley, 30, of Encinitas, Calif., finished the race - which included a 1- mile swim, 25-mile bike ride and 6.2-mile run - in 1:50:14.
In the last five years, Tinley, last year’s winner, placed in the top five in 28 out of 29 series races, winning nine.
Tinley, who finished Sunday’s swim in 16th place, stole the lead during the run from Brett Marshall, 26, of San Diego. Marshall, who had the fastest time in the swimming and biking legs, ended up taking fifth place, with 1:52:46.
Brooks Clarks, 20, of Westchester, Penn., finished in second in 1:50:34. He was followed by Harold Robinson of Walnut Creek, Calif., in 1:50:53, and John Devre, Bass Lake, Calif., 1:52:38.
In the women’s event, Linda Buchanan, 30, of Davis, Calif., recovered from a slow start in the swim to take the lead during the biking leg. She took first for the second year in a row with 2:02:55.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - San Francisco 49ers inside linebacker Riki Ellison fractured his right forearm during a 30-17 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers and will be out at least eight weeks.
John McVay, the team’s general manager, said two other inside linebackers who were waived last week - Jim Fahnhorst and Tom Cousineau - will be given tryouts today. One will be signed to replace Ellison.
Also, right guard Randy Cross strained his right knee in Sunday’s loss, but is expected to play next week. If not, Jesse Sapolu will start.
Other injuries included Jeff Fuller with a sprained toe, Bubba Paris with a bruised knee, Don Griffin with a bruised thigh and Pete Kugler with hyperventilation and muscle cramps. Defensive end Larry Roberts did not play because of a sore knee.
