A few weeks after Crumpets Restaurant & Bakery owner/chef Francois Maeder announced that he was closing the doors of his venerable Northeast Side restaurant after 38 years, the building has been sold.
Sources with both Crumpets and the Hearthstone Bakery Cafe told the Express-News Tuesday that Hearthstone would be taking over the space at 3920 Harry Wurzbach Road after Crumpets’ final day of service Sept. 15.
“I’ve been in the restaurant business for more than 40 years,” Maeder said in the release after the closing of the restaurant was announced. “I’m ready to do something different. My dream is to travel a lot while continuing to explore other options that combine culinary talent with travel and exploration.”
Hearthstone, which is owned by Jason Vandeberg, currently has two San Antonio locations, one in Olmos Park at 4212 McCullough, and one at The Forum at 8096 Agora Pkwy. The a menu is heavy on breakfast classics, soups, salads, wraps and panino.
For dessert, Hearthstone offers a lineup of freshly baked cookies, pastries, brownies and pies.
Chef Francois Maeder will celebrate one last hurrah with an ultimate wine dinner before Crumpets Restaurant & Bakery closes its doors for the last time. The restaurant will host its final dinner Sept. 7, and it will feature a five-course menu with each dish paired with a selection from Crumpets’ extensive wine collection, which will be on sale separately at reduced prices.
Dinner pairings include: oysters Rockefeller with Château Haut Beaumard, Graves de Vayres; crabmeat-stuffed mushrooms with J. Moreau & Fils, Vouvray; baked brie in puff pastry with Exem, Bordeaux; entrecôte and Bordeaux shallot sauce with Château de Ribebon, Bordeaux Supérieur; and Meringue Crème de Cassis with Haute Couture, Blanc.
