Monroe accepting participants for Memorial Day parade
MONROE — The town is still accepting applications for floats and marching groups for this year’s Memorial Day parade. The parade takes place 2 p.m. May 26 — the day before Memorial Day.
Town Clerk Vida Stone said the town will be accepting applications for parade participants until May 21. Stone said the deadline is relatively late because “we get so many last minute additions.”
The theme of this year’s event is “Honoring Our Heroes: Past and Present,” and Stone said one new aspect of the parade is that there will be a Topless and Taps Jeep event at Veracious Brewing, 246 Main St., from 3 to 7 p.m. the day of the parade. The event will include food and drinks, but there will also be a moment of silence for veterans.
The line of march for the actual parade will begin at Lower Elm Street and Route 111, and will proceed to the New War Memorial on the Town Green. A memorial service will be conducted on the green.
Groups marching or on a float are asked not to use silly string or poppers, so as not to upset any horses that will be in the parade. Also, those planning to throw candy are asked to throw into the crowd to avoid injuries from children running into the marchers.
There is not a rain date for the parade, but, in the event of rain, the memorial ceremony will take place at 2 p.m. May 26 in the Monroe Town Hall Council Chambers.
Those with questions about the event, or who are interested in entering a marching unit or float, can contact Stone at 203-452-2800 or email@example.com, or visit the town web site.
