Avalanche Kills Two in Pakistan

August 4, 2000

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) _ An avalanche hit an Italian team of mountain climbers in northern Pakistan, killing two of them, an Italian Embassy spokesman said Friday.

Omar Vecchio, 38, and Domenico Palandri, 46, were buried under snow and mud Monday while scaling the 24,000-foot Diran mountain in Minipen, Gilgit, roughly 140 miles northeast of Islamabad, the spokesman said on condition of anonymity.

The nine other members of the team were safe, he said.

Vecchio’s body has been recovered, and a search was on to find Palandri’s body.

No other details were immediately available because of the remoteness of the area.
