EUGENE, Ore. (AP) _ Jeff Hartwig smashed his American record in the pole vault, soaring 19 feet, 9 inches, at the USA Outdoor Track and Field Championships Sunday.

In clearing on his first attempt, Hartwig surpassed the mark of 19-8 1-2 he set last year.

The record made Hartwig the third all-time outdoor performer, behind only Sergei Bubka of Ukraine and Okkert Brits of South Africa. One other vaulter has cleared 19-9 _ Rodion Gataullin of Russia did it indoors.
