KINGSTON, R.I. (AP) _ Tailback John Newson scored three touchdowns and ran for 162 yards as Rhode Island crushed Brown 23-3 on Saturday.

Rhode Island (3-0), which ran up 553 yards, scored on its first three possessions. The Rams drove inside the Brown 20 five other times during the game, but were unable to score.

Kicker Chris Cassara put Rhode Island on the board with 5:05 remaining in the first quarter, his 22-yard field goal ending an 82-yard drive.

Newson then scored on runs of one and three yards.

Rhode Island’s Chris Pierce opened the second half by returning the kickoff 69 yards to the Brown 11, but the Rams fumbled on a fourth-and-1 on Brown’s 7- yard line.

Brown (0-2) moved 81 yards in 10 plays to get on the scoreboard, with Leo Rowland hitting a 31-yard field goal.

After being held scoreless inside the Brown 20 three straight times - a missed field, an unsuccessful fourth-down run and an incomplete pass - Newson circled three yards around left end for his third touchdown of the game.

The victory was Rhode Island’s third straight over Brown, the first time the Rams have won three in a row over the Bruins in the 76-game series.

Kevin Neville, the Yankee Conference’s leading quarterback, completed 16 of 30 passes for 265 yards.
