Sand Buries Worker Alive

April 30, 1988

ST. LOUIS (AP) _ Sand breaking loose from the sides of a hopper buried and killed a maintenance worker Saturday, authorities said.

The unsually powdery sand, used to make molds for brake parts, had been caked onto the sides of the hopper that Bernard Hayes, 38, was cleaning, said Battalion Fire Chief Frank Schaper.

It took about five hours to recover Hayes’ body after the sand caved in at 4:45 a.m. at the Warner Div.-Cooper Industries plant, Schaper said. He said one fireman suffered a minor back injury when he became trapped in the soft sand and was pulled out by his safety harness.

Authorities said two other workers escaped serious injury in the accident.

Company officials said the accident would be investigated.
