One Killed, Three Wounded in Shootout At Dance Hall
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) _ One man was killed and three others seriously wounded during a gun battle between gangs at a crowded dance hall early Saturday that saw at least 50 shots fired from automatic weapons, police said.
About 300 people were attending a Jamaican reggae party at the Fort Lauderdale Fire Department’s Benevolent Association hall when the shooting broke out around 3:30 a.m., said Fort Lauderdale Police spokeswoman Charmaine Gittens.
″Between 50 and 60 shots″ were fired from machine guns and other automatic weapons, and shells were found throughout a one-block area around the hall, which had been rented for the event, said Ms. Gittens.
It was not clear what touched off the shootout, but it began after members of a Miami-based gang, identified as Shower Posse, arrived, said police Detective David Patterson.
The shooting started outside the building and moved inside as a second group returned the gunfire, he said. When officers arrived, they found people fleeing and others dragging wounded people to cover.
No arrests had been made, said Ms. Gittens.
