Devil Rays Trade Bautista to Royals
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) _ The Tampa Bay Devil Rays traded infielder-outfielder Jose Bautista to Kansas City for cash Monday.
Bautista had been designated for assignment Friday. He hit .167 with no homers and one RBI in 12 games for the Devil Rays.
Bautista, 23, opened the season with Baltimore and hit .273 in 11 at-bats over 16 games. Tampa Bay claimed him off waivers June 3.
``Above-average arm strength at the third base position. Has good defensive skills,″ Royals general manager Allard Baird said. ``More of a line drive-type hitter.″
Bautista will report to the Royals on Tuesday. Joe Randa, the Royals’ regular third baseman, was not in the lineup for Monday night’s game against Baltimore because of soreness in his knee.
The Devil Rays also optioned pitcher Chad Gaudin to Triple-A Durham.
Gaudin allowed six runs and 10 hits in five-plus innings in Sunday’s 11-4 loss to Florida. The right-hander failed to get out of the first inning of his start against Toronto last week.
Right-hander Bartolome Fortunato was recalled from Durham. He was 4-2 with a 2.39 ERA in 28 relief appearances.
