MUSIC REVIEW OF YEARS GONE BY: Heart Break
Released: June 20, 1988
Label: MCA Records
“Heart Break” was the fifth studio album from the R&B group New Edition. In an attempt to show themselves as a more mature group, New Edition hired producer team Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, and after the very public exit of Bobby Brown, they brought Washington, D.C.-bred singer, Johnny Gill.
During this time, Ralph Tresvant was considering leaving the group, but as the the group became a quintet again thanks to the edition of Gill, New Edition was able to create one of their biggest hits, “Can You Stand the Rain.”
The hit song showcased the smoothness of Gill’s voice, making it an easy track to love.
