Police Arrest 2 Teens in Beating Death
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) _ Police arrested two teenagers Thursday in the beating death of a 43-year-old man after the attack was captured by surveillance cameras outside a bar.
Joshua Conley, 14, and Elijah Nichols, 15, are charged with aggravated murder and aggravated robbery in the attack on Terry Ward. Police issued a warrant for a third suspect, Emmanuel Jackson, 18, on the same charges.
Video from cameras outside the bar shows the assault and the attackers going through Ward’s pockets. Authorities said Ward made an attractive target because he was walking alone and had been drinking.
The teenagers knocked Ward to the ground then went through his pockets and took an undisclosed amount of money, police said.
Ward’s skull was fractured and he died of brain injuries, likely from his head hitting the pavement, according to an autopsy. He lay in the parking lot for two hours before police were called.
A police dispatcher said Conley and Nichols were being held at the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Center. Officials at the center could not confirm the two were there or provide other information, including whether the two had lawyers, because they are juveniles.
