GHBA REMODELERS COUNCIL Remodeling can improve lives

May 26, 2019

In April, the Greater Houston Builders Association’s (GHBA) Remodelers Council continued its history of giving back to the Houston area through its annual charity renovations. Partnering with HomeAid Houston, the council renovated the facilities of Santa Maria Hostel and Lydia’s Place to better serve the residents and their families. The projects were headed by Melanie Heinrich with TriFection Remodeling & Construction; Cassie Milam with The Detering Co.; Remodelers Council president Sherry Pruitt, owner of Whodid It Designs & Remodeling; William Cole, owner of Divine Renovation; and Donna Buenik, director of builder programs, GHBA.

The mission of Santa Maria Hostel is to “empower women and their families to lead healthy, successful, productive and self-fulfilling lives.” Santa Maria has transformed lives by serving the women and children of Houston and surrounding areas since the 1950s. By offering vital services and life-changing support, the organization offers a pathway to success through recovery. Visit www.santamariahostel.org/about-us.

The Santa Maria project renovation included removing doors and adding drywall; painting all the rooms, baseboards and ceilings; replacing lighting and flooring; relocating the laundry area; and installing two new refrigerators. Individual closets will be built for the residents.

Lydia’s Place offers 15 single-room-occupancy apartments to recovering, drug-free males, 18 years of age or older, who are living with HIV/AIDS. Residents may reside at Lydia’s Place as long as they are compliant with program guidelines. Support services are available to residents and their families. Visit www.acaringsafeplace.org.

The Remodelers Council replaced eight A/C units and repaired water-damaged walls and floors at Lydia’s Place; and appliances were purchased for several units and for the office. Volunteers built a shed to house tools and are devising a plan to renovate the walkway leading to the units.

The Remodelers Council thanks its volunteers and sponsors who donated products and services: International Flooring, Expressions Home Gallery, Closet Factory, High Performance Home Systems, Lowe’s, Sherwin-Williams, Colony Flooring, and lunch sponsor: Moe Toofan, TBR Construction. It also thanks all the trades who worked hard to make everything come together.
