Two hurt after 2 vessels collide in LI Sound
Two people were injured after two vessels collided Thursday night in the far western end of Long Island Sound, according to the U.S.Coast Guard.
It happened near Hart Island, N.Y., about a dozen miles southwest of Greenwich Harbor.
At around 11:15 p.m., Coast Guard Sector New York command center was notified of a vessel collision where a 40-foot vessel and an 18-foot vessel collided, both receiving damage.
“A rescue crew from Coast Guard Station Kings Point arrived on scene approximately 15 minutes later, and the crew brought two injured people aboard their 29-foot Response Boat - Small,” the Coast Guard said in a release.
“The two people were then transferred to shore where emergency medical professionals who treated their injuries.”
The damaged vessels were towed by commercial salvage.
The cause of the accident is currently under investigation.
Hart Island is the easternmost part of the Bronx.
Over the years, the island has been used as a Union Civil War prison camp, a psychiatric institution, a tuberculosis sanatorium, potter’s field, a boys’ reformatory and the location of Nike missles during the Cold War.
