Queen Elizabeth Has Knee Surgery

December 13, 2003

LONDON (AP) _ Queen Elizabeth II left a London hospital Saturday, a day after she underwent successful knee surgery and had benign skin lesions removed from her face.

The 77-year-old queen, walking with a cane, left the private King Edward VII Hospital around 10 a.m.

Buckingham Palace has said the arthroscopic surgery that removed torn cartilage from her left knee took about an hour and a quarter Friday. Doctors also removed benign skin lesions from her face while she was under anesthetic, Buckingham Palace said.

The palace said the monarch, who had similar surgery on her right knee in January, should be fully active within a few weeks.

She was expected to convalesce at the royal Sandringham estate in southeast England, where senior royals spend Christmas and New Year’s.
