Netherlands 16, Australia 6
ATLANTA (AP) _ The Netherlands, routed by Japan in its opener, rebounded with a 16-6 Olympic baseball victory over Australia on Monday.
Marcel Joost went 4-for-5 with two RBIs in the game, which lasted only eight innings. It was the Netherlands’ second straight game that ended early because of the international 10-run ``mercy″ rule. The team’s loss to Japan was by a 12-2 score.
Randolph Balentina and Evert-Jan ’t Hoen had three hits apiece for the Dutch team, which got at least one hit and one run from each starter.
The Dutch won the European baseball championship last year.
``A lot of people don’t know we play baseball in Europe,″ Leurs said. ``Players work five days a week, practice at night and play on the weekends. Against the big four _ Cuba, the United States, Japan and Korea _ we are still behind.″
The Netherlands improved to 1-1. Australia is 0-2.
