NYC man gets 1 day in jail in bias assault plea

December 19, 2014

NEW YORK (AP) — A plea deal has been reached in the 2008 attack on a black man by a Jewish member of a Hasidic civilian patrol in New York City.

Yitzhak Shuchat pleaded guilty to assault on Friday in exchange for prosecutors dropping a more serious bias charge. He’s to serve one day in jail.

The victim told police that he was on the street in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn when Shuchat whacked him with the baton.

Shuchat’s supporters have said he was responding to a report of black men harassing Jews.

After authorities launched a hate crime investigation, Yitzhak fled to Israel. He was extradited to the United States earlier this year.

The case touched a nerve in Crown Heights, a neighborhood with a history of racial tension.
