Freeman Sets Women’s Free Throw Record
BOCA RATON, Fla. (AP) _ Jacksonville State’s Shanika Freeman set a women’s NCAA record by making 22 consecutive free throws in a game Thursday night.
Freeman went 22-of-22 from the line against Florida Atlantic, breaking the previous single-game mark of 20 in a row held by two players. Kristeena Alexander of George Mason did it against Central Florida in 1996. Liz Beggs of Kent State tied the mark against St. Bonaventure in 2000.
Freeman, a 6-foot-1 sophomore center from Chattanooga, Tenn., finished the game with a career-high 42 points on 10-of-17 shooting. She added 13 rebounds, three blocks and two steals, but the Gamecocks lost 96-83 to Florida Atlantic, thanks mostly to 37 turnovers.
The NCAA record for consecutive free throws is 60 set by Ginny Doyle of Richmond in 1992.
