Saddam Hussein Makes Appeal to Iraqi Women With PM-Iraq-Kuwait Rdp

August 13, 1990

NICOSIA, Cyprus (AP) _ Here are excerpts of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein’s appeal early Sunday to Iraqi women, read over Baghdad radio by an announcer and monitored and translated by The Associated Press in Nicosia.

Saddam addressed the women as mujahedat, or female holy warriors, and majeda, or glorious women. He reviewed at length their role in supporting Iraqi men in previous wars, including the 1980-88 war with Iran, and to the burden of caring for their families while the men were at the battlefront.

---

Today, you have additional responsibilities to those you had shouldered before. You are called to take on a special role in all the social and domestic affairs...

The role that is suitable for you today, dear majeda, is that of organizing the economic life from the entire society in addition to your previous duties. It is when the economic life is organized in accordance with the overall plan we seek that we can consider the battle over in favor of Iraq and the invaders deceived, fleeing one after the other...

It is then that we will possess all the potentials to take on all the amassed forces of evil and those who might be massed in the next two months...

---

What is demanded is that the amount of food in pots or on the table be limited to only what we really need ... and that the table not be crowded as the tradition has been with various dishes and types of fruit...

What is demanded is that no one stockpile food supplies in his home and that he keeps only what is needed for the day or a week. Stockpiling will bring about shortages....

I know, as well as you do, that Iraqi families, even those with limited income, are able to live for a year without purchasing clothes or food...

Each family should take the initiative and tell its neighbor how instead of consuming 5 or 10 kilograms (11 to 22 pounds) of meat a month, it has cut down its consumption by half... It is with this that we can hit the core of the American schemes which they have plotted against us in accordance with the mentality that money is everything in life...

Even during the war with Iran, our lives were not lacking except the very trivial things.

Today, however, after the forces of evil took the decision of boycott and siege, what is required is an attitude of more awareness...

---

I don’t believe the patriotic awareness of any of you accepts that one stockpiles whatever he can to leave another in distress... thus diverting the attention away from the needs of the men as they prepare themselves for the battle should it break out.

I don’t believe any of you accepts to stockpile more of what is needed while we all stand on equal footing in the same trench...

Master your role as you have done in the past so Iraq can emerge triumphant as it has in the past...

Iraq’s national wealth is abundant... Our supplies of essential needs and foodstuffs is great. So victory is on our side and defeat is certain for the aggressors who have pinned all their hopes to their economic sanctions and to their forces and their useless fleets.
