HAVEN Grant Funds Veteran’s New Family Home
FORT WORTH, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec 6, 2018--Returning to civilian life after his service in the U.S. Army was not an easy transition for Specialist Joshua Ashby. His wife, Karen, a nursing student he met after completing his required active service, helped ease his transition, recommending treatment options for his physical and mental health.

Josh and Karen married in 2014 and welcomed a baby girl a year later. In 2017, they welcomed their second child, a son, who was diagnosed with a number of heart defects, including Hypoplastic Right Heart Syndrome and Tricuspid Atresia. At less than one year old, their son had undergone four open-heart surgeries, five heart catheterizations, feeding tube placement in his stomach and continues to have therapies for feeding/speech, occupational and physical therapy.
Today, the Ashby family received the keys to their new, mortgage-free home in Fort Worth’s West Fork Ranch. The home was provided by Operation FINALLY HOME, a nonprofit dedicated to providing American veterans with custom-built homes mortgage free, along with Pulte Homes through their Built to Honor program. Operation FINALLY HOME received a $7,850 Housing Assistance for Veterans (HAVEN) grant from Texas Capital Bank and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas (FHLB Dallas) to offset construction costs for the Ashby family’s home.
“Thanks to the generosity of FHLB Dallas and Texas Capital, we are able to provide wounded, ill or injured veterans with mortgage-free homes, which allow the family to continue to heal,” said Rusty Carroll, executive director of Operation FINALLY HOME. “Our organization is so blessed to work with amazing builders and sponsors such as FHLB Dallas and Texas Capital, who help us honor heroes with homes.”
Mr. Ashby, a Justin, Texas, native, joined the Army in 2009 and later deployed to Afghanistan. As the result of his combat experiences, he now struggles with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), a traumatic deviated nasal septum, memory loss, depression and mood swings.
In June 2011, he was deployed to Afghanistan as a scout sniper. While there, he experienced multiple fire fights and incidents of mortar rounds and rockets coming down on his team. On Halloween of 2011, he watched as their lead vehicle hit an estimated 200-pound IED.
Mr. Ashby and his team orchestrated a helicopter rescue for the injured, and then they continued to fight. During a nighttime mission, he broke his nose after hitting a mounted weapon system and was unable to seek help immediately. Despite a later surgery, he remains unable to breathe through his nose.
For his service, Mr. Ashby was recognized with several awards, among them a Combat Action Badge, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Campaign Star, Army Commendation Medal and Army Good Conduct Medal.
HAVEN is a unique grant program offered by FHLB Dallas through its member institutions, such as Texas Capital Bank, that reaches out to veterans and active-duty service members who have been disabled in the line of duty since September 11, 2001. It provides grants up to $7,500 to support necessary home modifications. To qualify, veterans must also meet income eligibility requirements. This year, FHLB Dallas has made available through members $75,000 in HAVEN grant funds. The program launched in 2011 with $250,000 set aside for the program. Since then, FHLB Dallas and members, like Texas Capital Bank, have awarded more than $340,000 to assist veterans.
“Texas Capital Bank is proud to support our veterans, and we are happy to partner with FHLB Dallas on the HAVEN program,” said Effie Dennison, SVP and director of community development and corporate social responsibility at Texas Capital Bank. “A big part of our company’s mission is supporting the communities we serve and being able to do it in this way is incredibly rewarding.”
Melanie Dill, FHLB Dallas community and economic development product manager, said HAVEN is a wonderful example of the type of grant programs offered by the organization to enrich lives and better communities.
“HAVEN is offered exclusively to those who serve in the military and helps to put veterans who have been injured or who are ill due to their service, and their families, on the road to recovery,” Ms. Dill said. “It’s gratifying to partner with our members, such as Texas Capital Bank, to provide this vitally important support.”
