Democrat Goldberg calls for new fiscal agency

September 22, 2014

BOSTON (AP) — Democratic candidate for state treasurer Deb Goldberg is calling for the creation of a new agency to predict the cost of legislation and provide multi-year state budget forecasts.

Goldberg said the agency would be non-partisan and would help enhance accountability, transparency, and public trust in state government by encouraging responsible fiscal planning.

Goldberg said developing multi-year budget forecasts to project revenue and spending would encourage Beacon Hill lawmakers to weigh the future financial challenges of policies as they craft a state budget for the upcoming year.

Goldberg, who served for six years on the Brookline Board of Selectmen, is facing off against Republican Michael Heffernan of Wellesley in the Nov. 4 election.

Current state Treasurer Steve Grossman lost the Democratic primary for governor and won’t seek re-election as treasurer.
