Davis Leads 1-2 U.S. Speedskating Finish

MOSCOW (AP) _ Americans Shani Davis and Chad Hedrick topped the men’s overall standings Saturday after two races at the World Allround Speedskating Championships.

Davis led the field with 74.969 points, with Hedrick just 0.13 points behind. Sven Kramer of the Netherlands was in third with 75.917.

Anni Friesinger of Germany dominated the 500 and 3,000-meter races for an overall lead in the women’s field.

Japan’s Takahiro Ushiyama was the surprise winner in the men’s 500 meter with a personal best of 36.28 seconds. Davis clocked 36.33 seconds for second, with Hedrick _ the defending overall champion _ third in 36.65.

Norway’s Oystein Grodum won the men’s 5,000 meter in 6 minutes, 22.31 seconds. Hedrick finished second, 1.30 seconds behind, and Dutchman Bod de Jong was third in 6:20.5. Davis placed fifth in 6:26.39, enough for the overall lead.

Friesinger topped the women’s standings with 79.980 points. She clocked 39.04 in the 500 meters and 4:05.65 in the 3,000.

Canada’s Cindy Klassen placed second in the 500, just six one-hundredths behind Friesinger. Klassen ranked fifth in the 3,000 to grab second place overall. Germany’s Claudia Pechstein is third overall after finishing eighth in 500 and second in 3,000.

The championships finish on Sunday.
