Luke Edwards signs with Geneva College
ONA — Luke Edwards became Rick Chaffin’s second student-athlete to sign with Geneva College after the Cabell Midland senior inked his letter of commitment to the four-year Pennsylvania school Wednesday.
Edwards joins Lambros Svingos who played for Knights’ head coach Chaffin when he was on the staff at Huntington.
Chaffin said Geneva head coach Jeff Santarsiero remembered him from when the Golden Tornadoes recruited Svingos and had the Highlanders alum join him in several games watching Edwards play.
Edwards said Geneva offered him at the beginning of Cabell Midland’s boys season which eventually took it to the state tournament where it had not been since its championship season of 2002.
He said he chose the school after visiting it and meeting the head coach.
“It’s student body is smaller than Cabell Midland. It’s an old school, it’s campus is beautiful in the fall,” Edwards said.
With an academic scholarship in his pocket that will cover half the cost of his education, Edwards said he would have committed sooner but needed to arrange the rest of his financial aid before making the commitment to the school official.
Edwards credited his father for making him get in the weight room, his brother for pushing him and Chaffin for fixing his jump shot which was, “the weakest spot in my game.”
“Without them this wouldn’t be possible,” Edwards said.
Chaffin said Edwards will make Cabell Midland proud and said he thinks Edwards’ career is still on the rise.
“He’s a good kid, a good student and he’s gotten a lot better since I got him two years ago,” Chaffin said.
As a senior Edwards was one of the center pieces of the Knights’ tournament team this season. He said he’ll have someone in the dorms there he’s familiar with — Isaac Massie of Calvary Baptist Academy in Hurricane will be there with him.
Geneva is a faith-based private liberal arts school in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania that competes at the NCAA Division III level.
The Golden Tornadoes finished 9-17 in the 2018-2019 season.
