Irish pound Wahama in region opener
MASON, W.Va. — Lenny Washington struck out 10, hit a three-run home run and drove in four runs to lead Huntington St. Joe (20-10) to a 9-2 victory over Wahama in the Class A, Region IV high school baseball tournament Monday at Claflin Stadium.
The Irish entertain the White Falcons (24-7) at 6 p.m. Tuesday at George T. Smailes Field at the YMCA Kennedy Center.
With a victory, St. Joe can clinch the region championship and a berth in the state tournament.
If Wahama wins, the series finale is scheduled for 5 p.m. Wednesday with the White Falcons serving as host.
The Irish built a 9-0 lead before Wahama scored twice in the bottom of the seventh. St. Joe scored twice in the first inning, then added four runs in the fourth.
Washington’s home run in the seventh made it 9-0.
“Lenny pitched great and hit a three-run bomb,” Irish coach Dave Jenkins said.
Corey Sweeney and Connor Joseph each went 2-for-4 with a run batted in for the Irish, who beat up on five Wahama pitchers.
Tyler Bumgarner and Tanner Smith each had a RBI for the White Falcons, who gave up 11 hits and made six errors. Starter Antonio Serevicz lasted 2 1/3 innings and took the loss, surrendering two runs, one earned, on four hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Jonathan Frye relieved Serevicz and was tagged for four unearned runs despite giving up only one hit and one walk.
Smith and Ethyn Barnitz combined for two scoreless inning before Bumgarner gave up Washington’s homer in the seventh.
