2019 Daddy Daughter Dance showcases paternal joy

March 12, 2019

Due to work, Vincent Coleman of Atascocita is usually forced to miss the annual Daddy Daughter Dance at Walden Country Club.

But it was different on 6 p.m. Friday as Coleman and his daughter, Autumn Anderson, got to dress up, have dinner and swing to songs together. The Navy civil service worker said that it was a bucket-list item crossed off.

“I think it’s absolutely fabulous,” he said of the event. “A good turnout of all these young, prosperous ladies — future lawyers and doctors. It’s a wonderful sight.”

About 74 people — the fathers, their daughters and, for some, accompanying guests — signed up for the event, said Cathy Bellnap, the venue’s private event director and member relations director. She had to cease taking reservations since it reached capacity.

This is the third Daddy Daughter Dance under Bellnap’s supervision. She said it was a “happy coincidence” that the event happened on International Women’s Day.

“I think we had better advertising, and our staff did a better job with the event, to make the guests have more fun,” she said. “We added a photo booth, we got a DJ, an interactive dessert station for the kids.”

Aside from desserts, which were ice cream and pink cotton candy, each father got an order of New York strip steaks and each daughter a chicken alfredo dish.

Bellnap said that there will be more family events at the country club after this Daddy Daughter Dance. First up: the Mad Science of Houston show on April 20.

“It’s a lunch-and-show,” she added. “Trying to get the young kids involved in science.”

In a couple of weeks’ time, Coleman will be deployed to the Middle East. Until then, only the immediate festivities matter.

“I’m only home maybe twice a year,” he said. “(My relationship with my daughter is) everything a father and a daughter is supposed to have. It’s wonderful. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.”

He then shifted his gaze to Anderson, who was soaking in the liveliness of “Can’t Stop The Feeling!” on the dancefloor.
