Youngstown St. 72, W. Illinois 54
YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio (AP) _ Andre Smith scored 26 points to lead Youngstown State University to a 72-54 victory over Western Illinois on Saturday.
The game was close for the first 12 minutes, but with the score tied 14-14, Smith put back a missed shot at the 7:45 mark and Youngstown State (10-4 overall, 3-3 Mid-Continent Conference) led the rest of the way.
Smith scored 20 of the Penguins first 26 points.
Youngstown State had a 37-26 lead by the end of the half, and led Western Illinois (9-5, 3-3) by as many as 22 points at three separate times in the second half.
The victory was Youngstown State’s fourth consecutive one overall and its third straight conference win. Western Illinois lost for the second time in its last three games.
In addition to Smith’s 26 points, Hank Raber scored 15 for Youngstown State. Raber led the Penguins in rebounds with eight.
Orlando Patrick led scoring for Western Illinois with 19 points. Mark Gagle and Shelby Thurmond both had 16 points. Gagle led Western Illinois in rebounds with 12.
