Moore Elementary School receives grant from Laura Bush organization

September 30, 2018

In order to aid Moore Elementary School with damage costs and material losses due to Hurricane Harvey, the Laura Bush Foundation for Americane Libraries donated $75,000, according to a Cy-Fair ISD press release.

The grant is a part of the second round of the organization’s 2017 Disaster Relief Initiative, which is giving 38 schools in Texas money in order to recover from damage done by Hurricane Harvey, according to officials with the Foundation for American Libraries. During the first round of donations, the foundation gave out $850,000 to 17 libraries, with the second round aiming to increase the total amount to $2 million, states the CFISD press release.

“As a former librarian, I know school libraries are important to improving student achievement, and with the second round of grants from the 2017 Disaster Relief Initiative, these schools can start on the path to full recovery,” Laura Bush said in a CFISD press release.

Anne Wicks, director of education reform at George W. Bush Institute, said the money will be used for educational materials.

“Schools use funds from the Laura Bush Foundation to purchase new print books, audio-books, e-books, or magazines, serial or e-magazine subscriptions,” she said in an email. “Each school submitted an application detailing their needs and the needs of the students they serve. All advisory members read and evaluated each application. The school librarians, principals and other school officials were then interviewed by a member of the Advisory Committee.”

Kim Katz, Moore Elementary School librarian, said the grant is much appreciated.

“It was overwhelming and we were very excited when we found out we got the grant,” she said. “We did a lot of reordering last year but weren’t really able to put them out on the shelves because things were coming in all year long. Now that I see what holes I have, we have this and we’re able to get the books we’re missing, new titles, new nonfiction to go along with curriculum needs for the teachers as well as new interests for the kids.”

This is the third grant awarded to Moore Elementary School, which was severely damaged during Hurricane Harvey to the point of closing for the 2017-2018 school year. Past grants include a total of $50,000 from the American Association of School Librarians and $5,000 from the American Association of University Women.
