Rain Cancels President’s Golf Game

June 14, 2003

KENNEBUNKPORT, Maine (AP) _ A downpour at dawn scrapped President Bush’s golf game with his father, but the two managed a fishing outing later Saturday.

Father and son climbed into a speed boat named ``Y’s Guy″ and went out in the gray waters of the Atlantic.

They each caught a couple of fish, all appearing about a foot and a half long. Smiling broadly, the Bushes held the striped bass in the air to show cameramen filming from shore.

To tempt the fish, dad and son used live bait. A third man in the boat threw chopped fish into the water.

Later Saturday, Bush was attending the wedding of a friend who was getting married near Walker’s Point, where the president’s parents have their oceanfront estate.

Bush, first lady Laura Bush and their twin daughters are spending a long, Father’s Day weekend in Kennebunkport with the former president, former first lady Barbara Bush and other members of the Bush family.

The president arrived Thursday night after stopping in Connecticut to make a speech about Medicare. He leaves Monday for New Jersey, where he will make remarks to the business community before returning to the White House.

In his weekly radio address, broadcast Saturday, Bush asked the public to mark Flag Day by showing respect to the Stars and Stripes as a thank-you to U.S. troops serving in foreign lands. It was 226 years ago, on June 14, 1777, that the Continental Congress made the flag the symbol of America.

``It inspires hope in people suffering under tyranny or terror,″ Bush said. ``It welcomes immigrants from every land searching for a better life. And it rallies our nation in times of conflict and crisis.″
