German Tourist Killed In Attempted Robbery
MIAMI (AP) _ A 31-year-old German tourist was shot dead in an apparent robbery attempt after she and a companion stopped their car to ask for directions, police said.
Dieter Riechmann, 43, said he and his girlfriend Kersten Kischniok, of Hamburg, Germany, arrived in Miami Oct. 2, toured several Florida cities and Stone Mountain, Ga. then came back to Miami last Wednesday.
On Sunday night, they were driving from Bayside, a collection of shops and restaurants along Biscayne Bay, when Riechmann made a wrong turn. He said he saw a man standing beside some parked cars.
″I drive direct to him,″ Riechmann said. ″I asked, ‘Where is Biscayne Boulevard?’ I know if I stay on Biscayne Boulevard I find my home. He say he wants to give help.″
The man was leaning near the passenger side of the car, looking at Ms. Kischniok, Riechmann said.
″Then I see him, he had something in his hand and he said something, but I don’t understand.″
The man tried but was unable to get Ms. Kischniok’s purse from the seat of the car, police said. Then he shot her in the right side of the head.
Riechmann drove until he could find a police car, but his girlfriend was already dead, he said. Riechmann ended up at a Miami Beach police station but could not tell police where the attack occurred. Police had made no arrests by Tuesday.
Reichmann said his girlfriend enjoyed visiting Miami and the two were scheduled to return to Germany on Wednesday.
″You can see her smiling in the videotapes I made, so happy,″ he said. ″Why do I earn this, coming here?″
